Richard,
You've gone above and beyond the call of duty! Sorry to hear about the lay off, but it seems like you've got a solid game plan and a healthy approach to everything.

Well, I got laid off about 2 months ago and had to cut back on quite a few expenses. My family is good for a few years, since I received a nice severance package and we can make it stretch for quite some time.

I look at it as my newly found emergency fund, as I have been building it for quite some time, but now I am very close to it.

I was able to cut back on the "wants" and got way more than $100 a month of cutting back.

That would be true if protecting ones credit score was a top priority. If a top priority is removing the debt and temptation of debt then canceling the card is a better choice. Ultimately, a person needs to decide which is most important. For the sake of this blog getting out of debt and staying out of debt is more important than building a solid credit score.

DO NOT CLOSE the account. Closing the account will damage your credit score more than a late payment. Pay down the balance and use it wisely in the future, but closing the account (especially multiple accounts) will damage your credit score. Unless you don't care about such things.

Thank you. I hope you don't mind, but I posted your article and talked about your blogs that I like on about.com's Frugal Living forum. Maybe you could check the forum out-I have been on there for about 12 years and they are so nice and friendly. It is a great site that we share ideas on how to save money, share menus, etc and offer great support for one another. So I introduced your site so hopefully you will see more traffic coming in if you can even tell! Keep up the good work!
